There’s rarely a conversation about Ford Performance that doesn’t somehow circle back to the V8, as V-eight power and Ford have gone together like peanut butter and jelly for ages. The two have collaborated on some of the most recognisable, eye-catching performance vehicles we know and love. We’ve got the famed Flathead V8 first available for 1932, Boss 429, 289 Small Block, 428 Cobra Jet, and of course, the current Coyote engine.
Mustang became synonym with accessible V8 muscle cars. Ford kept polishing V8 recipes for years delivering powerful yet everyday friendly sports cars. Yet behind the widely known story of the V8 powered performance Ford’s were cooking another audacious recipe. In the engineering programmes at Ford in the late 90s/early 2000s engineers were tinkering with an almost unbelievable thought a V10 aspirating Mustang.
It didn’t turn into anything close to what Ford had done previously. Instead of pushing one of the already established V8 engines to more power or stroking it longer, engineers added a couple more cylinders to the existing Modular engine and created a bespoke 5.8-litre V10 prototype. It was a lightweight, high-revving performance engine with an exotic engine sound, and the quarter-mile times were so far ahead of the Mustang GT that the car was left with a very different story that wasn’t ultimately told.

In this way Ford could afford to experiment with an even higher level of performances than with previous V-engines.

The plan was for near 500 hp and in excess of 450 lb-ft with a near 7,000-rpm redline.

3. Turning a Mustang GT Into a V10 Performance Machine
To do so properly, the Ford engineers require the appropriate car platform, to be put to testing the engineers got an appropriately modified 1999 Mustang GT (that was being used to develop the cobra R already). That the engineers had already a very robust platform which could withstand the additional performance power coming out of prototype engines.

Once the V10 engine was in place the Mustang became entirely different. Though the extra cylinders obviously provided a significant power boost, they did not add excessive weight due to the use of aluminium. In fact, at approximately 60 pounds lighter than the Cobra R’s 5.4-litre V8, it bettered the cars handling.

4. The 11-Second Quarter-Mile Performance That Shocked Everyone
The proof of concept actually arrived in the Mustang prototype at the drag strip. Equipped with Mickey Thompson slick tires, the experimental Mustang laid down a blistering 11.51-second quarter mile at 118 mph. In an era where a stock Mustang GT would typically be running in the mid-to-high 13-second range, this Mustang was a category killer.

Even using “normal” radial tyres (as opposed to drag speciality fitment), and this V10 Mustang was still producing incredible mid-12-second quarters proving the project was more than an engineering “what-if”. It was proving itself to be, with all intention of becoming the most unusual of all factory built Mustangs for Ford.

5. Why Ford’s V10 Mustang Never Made It To Production
Despite the prototype’s success, a number of factors prevented the company from selling a production V10 Mustang to the masses. The hardest barrier to overcome actually wasn’t the powertrain, but managing the electronic complex needed to ensure the unconventional 10-cylindered powerhouse kept all 10 cylinders in sync; there wasn’t anything quite like engine management out there to handle an odd-fire V10 in 1998.

While two EEC-V computers in which one managed a bank of cylinders successfully ran the prototype they worked too poorly to justify a Production car build. At the beginning of the 2000s, the demands on Ford were high with new emission regulations and cost of development plus a movement towards a different definition of performance, and the expenditure in building a low-volume, naturally aspirated V10 Mustang was far less worthwhile than investigating the future for forced induction which lead to the creation of the 2003 Cobra Terminator powered by a 4.6-litre V8 which had a supercharger fitted.

So while the V10 Mustang was not to see production, it did contribute toward the useful engineering knowledge which has been applied to subsequent Ford performance programs. My favourite thing about the V10 Mustang is what it’s compete with and how; the 2003-04 SVT Cobra “ Terminator ”. Completely opposing philosophy; Americans went to tradition with their SVT’s (Supercharged V8) while Ford developed an exotic hi-revving V10 for the V10’d S197 Mustang.

- Both targeted extreme Mustang capability

It goes with saying that the supercharged, 4.6-litre V8 of The Terminator provided explosive get-away and mounds of low end grunt in a notorious, brutal fashion and was as known for that as straight-line speed. A V10 ‘Stang would have been much smoother yet more dramatic; naturally aspirated power increasing on a smooth surge toward a 7,000 rev ceiling.
The road-going V10 Mustang would have carved out its own place in the Ford range. Rather than continuing the traditional V8 muscle-car approach, the V10 could have been Ford’s light and exotic option to take on something like a Viper. Combining the every day usability of the Mustang with V10 hypercar attitude would have given Ford an entirely new type of performance.

While today European high-performance automakers typically offered and are associated with revvy, technologically-intricate engines, America at the time was known purely for big displacement V8 muscle. This would have presented a confusing mix of old-school American might, coupled with an unusual dose of European sports car tech.

Thankfully for car lovers, the V10 Mustang prototype hasn’t been abandoned entirely. Luckily, it was saved, with a few of the engineers on the original project realising that it was significant and the basis for something awesome.
