Florida Man’s Backwards AutoZone Trip Goes Terribly South
Some stories are just too “Florida.” You kind of shake your head and think, “Yep, this only could have happened in Florida.” The Sunshine State often churns out quirky stories that make for the most interesting news headlines, and this story certainly fits right in. With its surrounding Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, Florida already has a landscape of intense scenery, volatile weather patterns and characters larger than life.
This story seems to start with a common fear for many car owners: a transmission that just decides not to work. For most of us, that probably meant getting help in one of a variety of forms and getting to a repair shop. One Florida man seems to have a unique method to deal with his failing transmission. That method was to put his car in reverse and slowly (very slowly, probably) drive backward to AutoZone.
Sounds like something nobody could even come up with and yet it is the very reason this story sticks. Florida’s flat landscape, hot/humid air, highways and endless stream of vehicles create the perfect landscape for this almost absurd and extremely determined road trip. One simple trip for an auto part would become an uncanny event encapsulating all the qualities we love about Florida’s most peculiar stories.
1. When a Breakdown Takes an Unusual Turn
The source of the entire matter was a typical clatter and clunk of a death to transmit. However, the fellow could not just shrug off the impending mechanical disaster and accept the loss of his machine. The bright solution offered up in the spur of the moment sounds simple; if the contraption can’t move forward, go backward. The product is far from mundane.

So it would be obvious by now driving backwards for any distance at all is unheard of in a car. Visibility for the driver gets to virtually nothing for other drivers. There is not a great idea of where the driver is gonna go, an easy turn suddenly becomes at least moderately challenging. But for some reason this guy didn’t let any of this dissuade him. He continued.
Now it becomes even more funnier considering the establishment chosen for the location. No one has to visit an AutoZone on a challenge, it’s a place for when you just want to fix your car trouble. So clearly this man needed an AutoZone to deal with a car situation but in his attempt to make everything right, he has arguably made things worse.
2. Florida’s Flat Landscape Made the Journey Possible
Not for Florida. Flat, that’s what “the Sunshine State” is known for. Britton Hill, at 345 ft above sea level, the state’s highest natural point, barely tops over just about 345. Unlike most other places there are no mountains growing to the Sunshine State, so the thought of someone having to drag the back end seems like a little bit more believable than cliff-side.
Level Roads, Difficult Decisions:

Most of Florida is flat coastal plain, much of which is swampland, marsh or is just plain low and flat. The land configuration has influenced nearly all facets of life in this state, from the type of communities you find to the ways roads have to get from point A to point B. Roads often run for many miles as straight as an arrow on relatively flat ground, hence this one of a kind road trip.
None of that makes it safe or sensible. But flat terrain doesn’t eliminate any of the risks associated with inclines; all it removes are things that can have very little impact on driving ability backward (visibility and traffic) versus those that can make you spin your vehicle out on even the gentlest incline (how you operate the car backward). The scenery could have assisted but it did not lend to making the decision a prudent one.
3. A Reverse Ride Through the Sunshine State
Another aspect of what’s transpiring that contributed to the spectacle: Florida’s environment. It is, after all, a hot and humid locale with several months out of the year with that as conditions: Any man working with a car for any length of time, in reverse no less, might have too much on their mind already without adding these unpleasant elements into the environment.

Each intersection, each driveway, each parking lot and each oncoming vehicle presents another risk.
However the sight to someone with clear views must have felt incredibly otherworldly and while most Florida drivers who can expect the unexpected might even do a second look when this particular incident popped up to them they know the automotive supply store being driven toward by such a car, wasn’t an expected sight, at all for that morning’s commute, either.
4. A State Already Famous for the Unexpected
While Florida is increasingly being used as a sort of catch all for the most outlandish and surreal stories in the news, this fits completely with their image. The state is used to taking in a record number of tourists and so naturally its roads are full of locals, holidaymakers, rental vehicles, delivery vans and rush hour workers, and so bizarre sights are likely to become a quick source of attention.

Florida only gets funnier when you look at the entertainment it offers. People travel to the Sunshine State to see Disney World and Universal Studios, Kennedy Space Center and “America’s oldest city”, historic St Augustine. They are curated experiences made to provide entertainment to visitors. And then there’s this one, no ticket or reservations needed.
While a man attempting to back up to an AutoZone isn’t your typical Florida landmark, that moment had the same chaotic energy as any the state is known for from amusement parks and beaches to resorts, landmarks, and even random events that have become legendary. Between all the destinations to consider visiting, sometimes ordinary Florida provides for the most exciting display.
5. The River That Knows How to Go Backward
In a bit of freakishly convenient coincidence to the story, Florida has a perfectly bizarre water feature that lends the narrative well. The river is called the St. Johns River and it’s unique to have it act sort of like a one-way street under certain environmental conditions with tidal pressure causing the direction of the flow to reverse.

This detail makes a hilarious comparison between the driver’s situation and the changes in nature. For heaven’s sake, you can’t go around to Florida anymore without tripping over something weird so this story fits right in the middle of a long list of truly freaky events and natural weirdness. 6. From Alligators to Sinkholes, Florida Has Plenty of Drama
The ecosystem of Florida is incredibly varied. Roads may wind their way through saw palmetto scrub, slash pine stands, marshlands, or any number of other vegetation. Wildlife is ubiquitous in Florida. Alligators, birds, and countless other animal species call this state their home.

There are other environmental problems in Florida which are hard to believe on their own. Burmese pythons have been introduced to southern Florida and are invasive, the state’s limestone bedrock causes sinkholes and Floridian Aquifer is a massive underground reservoir which supplies a massive amount of water.
In that context, it’s really kind of the least surprising piece of strange that could have happened to someone if a vehicle was driving down the road going in the other direction. But we have got lots of natural things out there that could also grab headlines; A backwards driving vehicle can usually still grab eyeballs without nature.
7. Florida’s History Adds Another Layer to the Story
Florida’s narrative is abundant with discovery, revolution and odd personalities. Spain claimed the region in the 16th century, with Florida eventually becoming the United States’ 27th state in 1845. Situated as a place where North America meets the Caribbean, it’s no surprise that this state has always been a key point in trade routes.

A bit of a joke about the traveler to achieve a goal. Juan Ponce de Len traveled to Florida in search of the legendary fountain of youth. Our current traveler, with not entirely different intentions (obviously not much fame, power or riches to be sought by an auto), seemed determined, nonetheless.
Admittedly this is somewhat of hyperbole, but that’s all a part of the joy. No doubt this man’s journey was not historical per se, but showed the same dog-headed persistence of carrying on the way you are, despite using non-conventional modes of transportation. The car didn’t want to move as designed, so he made it move another way.
8. The Drivers Who Had to Witness It
I guess one of the best joys I would find in the entire situation, would be to see the faces of every other person, on that particular road, driving their vehicle, as they approach an intersection, expecting regular traffic and to see something coming to meet them from backwards!! Must be a classic!

Because of the vast and various populace in Florida, these reactions would have naturally poured from individuals of numerous nations and linguistic backgrounds. Both english, and Spanish are used rather widely through the condition and might include yet an additional humor aspect to the variety of puzzled responses any type of peculiar visual could evoke.
Visitors would also have been scratching their heads if it was their first trip to the Sunshine State, it might not have seemed too wild to question if the car was part of some movie filming or, perhaps, an odd sort of tourist trap, before being made to realize it was just some driver trying to access AutoZone in the weirdest way ever.
9. The AutoZone Destination Makes the Story Better
The destination brings the episode to a beautiful, perfect close. AutoZone, after all, stands for the simple solving of practical, physical problems. People get to AutoZone because their cars have something wrong with them and require replacement parts or repair. The driver was, presumably, trying to remedy an easy mechanical problem and complicated his trip in ways he couldn’t have foreseen.

It’s certainly ironic to travel so far to acquire one specific part. Instead of finding a truck or wrecker for that part he turned the broken vehicle into the actual means to fetch the replacement. The problem required movement, and the solution just brought a whole new type of danger into the mix.
There are the many small mechanical issues; maybe a starter dies in the hot middle of day and the driver decides to drive backward into neutral because he can’t afford to leave the car in neutral and he can’t believe anything will hit them. Which, it turns out, was more about the idea of things eventually hitting you than it should have been for a traffic incident at 50. That kind of thing just makes them “Florida Man” stories that people love to keep talking about long after a car is finally scrapped.
10. When Going Backward Becomes the Way Forward
In the end, the rules of the road had no choice but to catch up with the peculiar trip. No matter how this venture concluded, the event proved how a mechanical failure can escalate into a bigger issue by taking the road less taken as a solution. At a point in time, this driver was a part of a rather peculiar street scenario.

The reason this story works for me is that it brings together so many features we find compelling about Florida the sunshine, the heat, flatness, varied populations, weird fauna, even our association with being strange. It’s a place where nature does bizarre things and peculiar human beings seem determined to vie with each other for strangest in show.
More importantly, the lesson learned on the trip is also an obvious and simple one. The man was traveling backward trying to fix a problem that demanded forward progress. The trip can be viewed as an absurd journey; however, it exemplified a bizarre logic of determination where one is sometimes willing to go through unconventional means to reach their destination. To the great expanse that is Florida, even the journey to AutoZone appears to be a great experience.
