One of the most fascinating times in the history of the UK car market is upon us, with a stream of new car brands poised to descend on Britain and present a fresh combination of ideas, technology and competition for an established market, long held in the grip of old faithfuls. These new arrivals hail largely from China, where the automotive industry has expanded at a phenomenal rate over the last decade or so.

Only a short while ago Chinese cars did not feature outside of their home market, now with heavy investment in battery technology and software integration the country has moved to the front line of EV manufacturing. A number of Chinese brands are now producing cars that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the European, American and Japanese competition.

As the country shifts away from internal combustion engine vehicles towards a lower emission future, there is a opening for these new manufacturers to succeed. From the cheap, fun city car to large luxury SUVs and performance EVs all of the below brands, amongst others, are hoping to take over Great British motoring as we know it. Here are 12 that could be on their way.

1. Yangwang

Yangwang is BYD’s off-road premium segment, designed to demonstrate the engineering and technology that the company is capable of developing. In terms of how the brand competes, rather than Luxury and high-end features as it’s primary driver, Yangwang looks to demonstrate engineering limits and the introduction of unique technologies that you’ll only ever see one automotive manufacturer doing.

A Luxury Brand Built Around Innovation:

  • Premium off-road sub-brand of BYD
  • Focus on advanced engineering solutions
  • High-performance electrified powertrains
  • Extreme capability and technology integration
  • Designed to challenge traditional luxury SUVs

Its most defining feature is perhaps its emergency floatation, which would see the vehicle float for a period in certain water situations. This, coupled with its range-extender and highly-developed vehicle control technologies and an entirely unconventional approach to engineering solutions, proves Yangwang as a brand which prioritizes a revolutionary new design of luxury off-road vehicles over a conventional approach.

2. Denza

Denza is BYD’s brand designed to tap the premium and luxury car segment. It began as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz Group but has since become BYD-owned focusing on luxury, technology and electric drive.

BYD’s Premium Luxury Challenger:

  • Premium luxury brand under BYD
  • Strong focus on technology and comfort
  • Electric and plug-in hybrid offerings
  • Expanding into international markets
  • Positioned against established luxury brands

A sophisticated grand tourer, the Denza Z9 GT is spearheading the brand’s expansion into the European market and can be specified with electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The elegant shooting-brake form, advanced driver technologies and luxurious cabin bring it to the table to take on the best of established European manufacturers. Denza will also offer the Denza D9, a large seven-seat MPV targeting families and business or executive hire services and is stressing both refinement and passenger comfort alongside advanced technology in its attempts to establish itself as a credible luxury brand.

3. Onvo

Onvo, as a new sub-brand under NIO, was officially established to cater to the booming family electric vehicle market. While NIO is positioned as an EV premium brand, Onvo targets the families of wider income group who looks for a practicable, efficient, and modern vehicle with affordable price.

NIO’s Family-Focused EV Brand:

  • Created specifically for family EV buyers
  • Focus on efficiency and practicality
  • Designed for high-volume market segments
  • Advanced electric vehicle technology
  • International expansion plans underway

The brand’s first mass-market vehicle is the Onvo L60 SUV, and the vehicle is set to challenge some of the world’s top-selling electric crossovers. An emphasis on aerodynamic efficiency is a key element of the design, helping to boost battery output and range. A lower drag coefficient and more efficient management of energy can help the L60 achieve range figures to match its rivals while still making it a practical everyday vehicle.

One key part of Onvo’s expansion plans includes overseas market entries and the UK is believed to be among the brand’s initial target countries. This could permit the brand to gain a foothold in the market before a wider European launch takes place, potentially attracting buyers wanting a family-oriented electric SUV focused on efficiency and being value-oriented while incorporating technology.

4. Firefly

Firefly is NIO’s more affordable electric vehicle brand. The company has developed the Firefly brand to appeal to buyers with tight budgets and to encourage more consumers to make the transition to electric mobility. The Firefly brand is very different from NIO’s luxury EV lineup and the Onvo brand which is family-oriented.

Affordable EVs for City Drivers:

  • Entry-level brand from NIO
  • Focus on affordable electric mobility
  • Designed primarily for urban environments
  • Compact and practical vehicle lineup
  • Potential access to battery-swapping technology

The first model for the new marque is a compact electric supermini, targeting drivers who require a practical and affordable mode of transport to commute and navigate busy city roads. The striking styling, compact proportions, and pragmatic qualities make it a desirable option for customers in the market for a car to rival the conventional small hatchbacks and entry-level EVs. Perhaps Firefly’s most attractive possibility would be the implementation of NIO’s swapping technology for batteries. Bringing this technology to markets such as the UK could enable customers to switch a flat battery for a full one in a matter of minutes, setting it apart from traditional methods of charging and from other offerings in the value electric market.

5. GAC

Guangzhou Automobile Group, abbreviated as GAC Group, is one of China’s leading automotive players. GAC’s combination of large-scale production expertise, in-house R&D capability and affordable price points may allow it to attract customers in untapped markets. Apart from an affordable entry-point, GAC also highlights its use of a user-friendly digital architecture, connectivity and the integration of a sophisticated vehicle network-key factors for buyers.

6. Mobilize

Mobilize, however, has approached the issue differently than typical car companies. Developed by Renault Group, the brand concentrates on urban mobility, as opposed to traditional cars, aiming to address urban issues like congestion, parking shortages and short-distance travel.

A New Approach to Urban Transportation:

  • Mobility-focused brand from Renault
  • Designed primarily for urban environments
  • Compact electric transportation solutions
  • Focus on efficiency and practicality
  • Supports personal and commercial use cases

An important product line is the Mobilize Duo. This essentially acts as an up-dated version of the Renault Twizy; it has an enclosed cockpit, more safety equipment and a design that takes into account ease of access to narrow city roads. Basically this vehicle design takes no interest in a conventional idea of driving but is concerned solely with its function. It is also worth noting the Mobilize Bento which is the cargo variant of the Duo, replacing the rear passenger space. The fact that Mobilize are also developing purpose-built vehicles for inner city transport, deliveries and car sharing programs illustrate that such models will likely become ever more integral to city transportation in the future.

Another unique selling point is the ability for owners to choose what they want, making them unique and offering a luxury feel without compromising technology and interior specification, along with a comprehensive range of optional features, detailing, materials and finish expected at the highest level. The Chinese marque hopes that its combination of luxury values combined with technology will be the driving force in establishing it as a strong competitor to more established premium car makers.

Models like the Exlantix E03 and Exlantix E0Y reflect the new brand’s desire. These are due to have higher end cabin materials, better connection systems, improved driving aids, a quality driving experience which in this way makes Exeed to look a plausible alternative to already existing prestigious manufacturers, helping Chery increase its global reach in the luxury car segment.

9. Lucid

In the world of EVs, Lucid Motors has gained prominence for luxury, performance and technology at the battery level. This is done by looking to combine the premium design, excellent performance, software technologies, and long-range driving ability of the Lucid models to compete with other premium EV alternatives already on the market.

Also drawing considerable attention from around the world is the Lucid Gravity. This is essentially a larger SUV variant, looking to offer Lucid’s technologies and efficiency know-how into the premium family car sector. Should Lucid’s expansion into foreign markets take off, it will be a powerful challenger to existing premium electric vehicle brands, combining innovative technology, range, performance and a premium design language.
